NISTA's annual review: HS2 and cladding remediation stay 'red'
NISTA's review of the Government Major Projects Portfolio confirms HS2 remains rated Red, alongside the cladding remediation programme, downgraded from Amber this year. Of 189 tracked projects, 29 are green, 109 amber and 34 red. The NAO warns HS2 costs could reach £102.7bn with delays of up to 13 years, and is separately investigating the Lower Thames Crossing. ACE has urged incoming PM Andy Burnham to create a Department for Infrastructure, while 28 industry bodies want him to "stay the course" on the £725bn pipeline.
Financial results season: mixed picture as Laing O'Rourke and JRL rebound, BRCK splits opinion
Laing O'Rourke's pre-exceptional profit nearly doubled to £157.7m on a £17.2bn order book. JRL returned to profit after three loss-making years. Speller Metcalfe's profit jumped too. BRCK's picture is mixed: revenue and adjusted profit rose, but statutory profit nearly halved after a failed takeover approach – a live framing gap alongside Seddon, whose results earlier this week were read as a "profit lift" by Construction Enquirer but a "profit dip" by Construction News and Building.
Worker safety remains firmly on the agenda
HSE is to visit Birmingham Children's Hospital after a worker's death on site, and a further fatality has been reported at a Structure Tone site in London's West End – two separate fatal incidents reported this week.
Housing and regeneration deals keep landing
Peel Waters has lodged plans for a £100m, 526-home co-living scheme at Glasgow's Yorkhill Quay, now confirmed by four outlets. In Salford, the next 900-home phase of a £1bn regeneration is moving forward. RIBA has named its 32 National Award winners, including an affordable scheme at Canada Water. Delancey has scaled back life sciences plans at an Islington scheme as the market slows.
